Gozo Wied il Mielah Window

About this spectacle

Wied il-Mielah Window is a dramatic natural arch on the western cliffs of Gozo, Malta's smaller sister island. Unlike the famous Azure Window that collapsed in 2017, this arch still stands, offering visitors a raw and windswept encounter with the island's limestone geology. The turquoise Mediterranean churns through and beneath the arch, carving channels into pale golden rock. Seabirds wheel overhead while waves echo off the cliff faces with a deep, resonant boom. The surrounding valley descends through garrigue scrubland to meet the sea, giving the walk a sense of gradual revelation as the arch comes into view. In calm conditions the water glows an extraordinary blue-green through the gap; in rough weather the scene becomes elemental, with spray and swell creating a very different but equally arresting spectacle. This is a quieter, less-touristed alternative to the island's more famous former arch, rewarding those willing to seek it out.
