Gooseberry Falls
A beloved North Shore waterfall where the Gooseberry River tumbles over ancient basalt ledges into Lake Superior — stunning in every season.
About this spectacle
Gooseberry Falls State Park on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior offers one of the most accessible waterfall experiences in the upper Midwest. The Gooseberry River cascades over a series of basalt ledges in tiers, with the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls each offering distinct perspectives on rushing water carving through ancient volcanic rock. In spring, snowmelt swells the river to a thundering roar, while summer brings calmer flows ideal for wading near the banks. Autumn transforms the surrounding boreal forest into vivid gold and orange, framing the falls in color. In winter, the falls partially freeze into dramatic ice sculptures clinging to dark stone. Visitors walk well-maintained trails close to the water, feeling the cool mist and hearing the constant percussion of falling water over layered basalt. The river mouth at Lake Superior adds a scenic bonus, where freshwater meets one of the world's largest lakes.
