Gokak Falls — India
A powerful horseshoe waterfall on the Ghataprabha River in Karnataka, with a dramatic gorge and a historic suspension bridge hanging directly above the cascade.
About this spectacle
Gokak Falls is a dramatic waterfall on the Ghataprabha River in northern Karnataka, where the river plunges into a deep horseshoe-shaped gorge. The falls roar with force during and after the monsoon season, sending mist drifting across the surrounding landscape. A striking feature is the old suspension bridge that hangs above the falls, offering vertiginous views straight down into the churning waters below. Visitors can feel the spray, hear the thunderous cascade, and observe the gorge walls carved by centuries of flow. The surrounding area is lush and green in the post-monsoon months, with the river running brown and powerful. In drier months the flow diminishes but the gorge itself remains impressive. Local activity around the site gives the experience an accessible, everyday character rather than a remote wilderness feel.
