Goblin Valley

Goblin Valley State Park in southern Utah unveils a surreal landscape of thousands of mushroom-shaped sandstone hoodoos, locally called 'goblins,' eroded from the Entrada Sandstone formation. Visitors wander freely among these rust-red and orange formations, which range from knee-height to several meters tall, with no enforced paths — an unusual freedom in US parkland. The valley floor feels otherworldly, especially at golden hour when low-angle light deepens the warm tones and shadows dramatize every curve and pockmark in the rock. Wind-carved alcoves and balanced rocks dot the surrounding cliffs. The silence is striking; on quiet weekdays, you may hear only wind and distant birds. Summer midday heat is intense, making early morning the preferred window. The night sky here is among the darkest in the American West, occasionally drawing stargazers as a secondary draw.
