About this spectacle

Goðafoss is one of Iceland's most dramatic waterfalls, where the Skjálfandafljót river plunges roughly 12 metres across a sweeping horseshoe-shaped curtain of white water stretching some 30 metres wide. Visitors stand close to the crashing falls on basalt rock platforms, feeling the cool mist on their faces and hearing the deep, continuous roar that fills the valley. The surrounding landscape of dark lava fields and pale sky gives the scene a stark, otherworldly quality. In winter, ice formations frame the falls and the water steams against the cold air, while summer brings long daylight hours that allow photographers to catch warm golden light in the perpetual Arctic evening. The easily accessible viewing areas on both banks mean visitors can experience the falls from multiple angles without strenuous effort, making it a rare combination of spectacular scale and genuine accessibility.
