Geomunoreum Lava Tube System
A vast lava tube network beneath Jeju Island, sculpted by ancient volcanic flows into cathedral-like underground passages adorned with mineral formations.
About this spectacle
Descending into the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System is a journey through geological time preserved in volcanic rock. Visitors walk through passages sculpted by ancient lava flows, encountering dramatic formations including lava stalactites, basalt columns, and multi-colored mineral deposits coating the cave walls in ochre, black, and white. The air inside is cool and still, carrying the faint mineral scent of volcanic rock. Natural lighting gives way to artificial illumination that highlights the textures of rippled lava floors and collapsed ceiling sections. The system includes several connected tubes, with some reaching impressive widths that create cathedral-like chambers. Above ground, the Geomunoreum scoria cone itself offers a contrasting landscape of volcanic craters and subtropical vegetation unique to Jeju Island. The combination of surface geology and subterranean wonder makes this one of the most complete volcanic landscape experiences in Asia.
