Geminid Meteor Shower — Atacama Desert
One of the year's richest meteor showers witnessed from the driest, darkest skies on the planet — the Atacama at peak Geminid season is an astronomer's dream.
About this spectacle
Each December, the Atacama Desert transforms into one of Earth's premier meteor-watching arenas as the Geminid shower peaks. At altitudes above 2,000 metres, the air is extraordinarily dry and thin, granting skies of near-mythical clarity. Observers lying on volcanic rock or desert sand can expect to count dozens of meteors per hour streaking from the direction of Gemini — swift, bright, often leaving persistent trains of glowing ionised gas. The silence is immense: no insect noise, minimal wind, just the crunch of boots and the collective intake of breath each time a fireball tears across the Milky Way. Temperatures plunge sharply after sunset, so layering is essential. The complete absence of light pollution at this remote location means even faint meteors and the zodiacal light are visible to the naked eye, making the Geminids here a genuinely otherworldly spectacle.
