Flume Gorge
A narrow granite gorge in New Hampshire's White Mountains where mossy walls, cascades, and boardwalks create an immersive water-carved canyon experience.
About this spectacle
Flume Gorge is a natural granite chasm carved by a rushing mountain stream in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire. Visitors walk through a narrow, cathedral-like corridor of moss-covered rock walls that rise sharply on either side, with waterfalls and cascades churning below wooden boardwalks. The air is cool and moist even in summer, carrying the scent of wet rock and forest. Boulders wedged between the walls overhead create dramatic framing, while the stream's constant roar fills the space entirely. Autumn transforms the surrounding forest into vivid color, making the gorge walls appear even more dramatic by contrast. The boardwalk trail winds through the gorge and loops back through the surrounding White Mountains landscape, offering both intimate canyon views and broader forested scenery.
