About this spectacle

Standing atop Feldberg — the highest point in the Black Forest and the tallest summit in Germany outside the Alps — visitors are treated to one of central Europe's most dramatic atmospheric displays. On calm autumn mornings, a sea of white cloud fills the Rhine Valley and surrounding lowlands while the peak rises like an island above the mist. The silence at the summit is broken only by wind, and the visual contrast between the glowing fog ocean below and the clear blue sky above is striking. As the sun climbs, golden light catches the rolling cloud surface, offering constantly shifting compositions. Fir-covered ridges occasionally pierce the fog nearby, adding depth and scale. The experience is contemplative and painterly, rewarding early risers who arrive before the inversion burns off.
