About this spectacle

Rising dramatically from the Teutoburg Forest, the Externsteine are five towering sandstone pillars reaching up to 40 metres in height. Visitors walk among these ancient rock formations, looking up at sheer vertical faces etched with natural hollows, carved chambers, and narrow passageways. From atop the accessible upper platforms, the surrounding forest stretches in every direction, offering sweeping views over the wooded lowlands of North Rhine-Westphalia. The texture of the rock — warm amber and ochre tones, pitted and grooved by millennia of weathering — rewards close inspection and photography. The site has a contemplative atmosphere, particularly in the early morning before crowds arrive, when mist sometimes lingers among the trees below. Stone steps and bridges connect the pillars at various levels, letting visitors explore the formations from multiple angles and heights.
