European Tree Frog Chorus — Camargue France
The Camargue's shallow lagoons and tamarisk marshes erupt in April and May in one of Europe's most concentrated tree frog choruses — thousands of male European tree frogs producing a cacophony so loud it can be heard from 400 metres as every reed stem and floating vegetation mat hosts a calling male, their tiny transparent throat sacs inflating to the size of their head with each repeated call. The tree frog is Europe's only truly arboreal frog, bright emerald green and capable of clinging to vertical surfaces with adhesive toe pads, and the Camargue holds one of the continent's densest populations in its network of freshwater ditches and seasonal pools. The chorus peaks during warm evenings in May and is supplemented by the booming of marsh frogs and the rattling of edible frogs, creating one of Europe's most richly layered amphibian soundscapes.
About this spectacle
On warm May evenings in the Camargue's vast wetland network, the air transforms into a wall of sound as thousands of male European tree frogs call simultaneously from every reed stem, floating vegetation mat, and tamarisk fringe. These jewel-bright emerald frogs — barely the size of a thumb — inflate throat sacs to match their own head size, producing a rasping, high-pitched chorus that carries 400 metres across the still water. Standing at the edge of a seasonal pool at dusk, visitors hear an almost disorienting density of sound layered with the deep booming of marsh frogs and the rattling edible frog calls beneath. Look closely at any vertical reed and you may spot the frog responsible: vivid green, motionless except for that pulsing throat sac, adhesive toe pads gripping the stem effortlessly. The Camargue's network of freshwater ditches and shallow lagoons hosts one of Europe's densest populations, making this one of the continent's most rewarding amphibian spectacles for both ears and eyes.
