Erawan Tiered Emerald Falls — Kanchanaburi Thailand

Erawan Falls in Kanchanaburi's Erawan National Park is Southeast Asia's most beautiful tiered waterfall — seven levels of emerald-green calcium carbonate pools connected by falls of 1–25 metres, the limestone chemistry creating an exceptionally clear turquoise water of unusual colour that turns the pools and cascades into an experience of almost artificial-seeming natural beauty. At levels 4–7, the falls cascade through undisturbed tropical forest accessible by a 2-kilometre trail, and the combination of the pool colour, the limestone travertine formations around each pool's edge, and the fish (Tor tambroides and other endemic Kanchanaburi species) visible in perfect clarity through the turquoise water makes Erawan one of the finest freshwater swimming environments in Asia. The dry season from November to April provides the clearest water and most accessible upper pools.

About this spectacle

Erawan Falls unfolds across seven distinct tiers of emerald-green pools connected by cascades ranging from one to twenty-five metres in height. The limestone chemistry — calcium carbonate dissolving into the water — produces an almost otherworldly turquoise clarity that makes the pools appear artificially coloured. Visitors wade through lower tiers where small fish nibble at skin, then climb a forest trail through dense tropical canopy to reach the quieter upper levels where travertine rimstone dams frame each pool. The sound layers shift from the crowd-animated splashing of the lower pools to the undisturbed hush of jungle and falling water at levels four through seven. Morning light filters through the forest canopy and illuminates the turquoise water at its most vivid. The fish — including the large Tor tambroides — are visible in perfect clarity from the pool edges. The dry season from November to April delivers the calmest, clearest conditions and fully accessible upper pools.
