Eiger North Face Vista
The Eiger's legendary 1,800-metre north face looms over the Bernese Oberland — one of the Alps' most iconic and formidable rock walls.
About this spectacle
Standing at the base of the Bernese Oberland, the Eiger's north face rises as one of the most dramatic rock walls in the Alps — a near-vertical sweep of dark limestone and ice that soars above the valley. Visitors looking up from Grindelwald or the Kleine Scheidegg plateau feel the wall's sheer scale press down on the senses, even from a distance. Cloud banners tear across the upper ridgeline, rockfall echoes intermittently, and the face shifts tone with the light — silver-grey under overcast skies, copper at dawn, almost black against an alpine sunset. Even non-climbers feel the weight of the mountain's reputation here. In winter the face is plastered in snow and ice; in summer patches of snowfield cling to the couloirs while the lower cliffs stand bare. The surrounding meadows and rack-railway stations give accessible vantage points that reward photographers at every level, from quick snapshot to long telephoto study of the upper icefield.
