Eifel Maar Lakes — Vulkaneifel
The Vulkaneifel of Rhineland-Palatinate contains the greatest concentration of maar lakes in the world — volcanic explosion craters filled with water of extraordinary clarity and depth, their circular outlines and abrupt steep walls the unmistakable signature of phreatomagmatic eruptions that shook this region between 11,000 and 700,000 years ago. The Gemündener Maar, Weinfelder Maar, and Totenmaar form a trio of lakes within walking distance of each other near Daun, each with distinctively different colours — deep cobalt, grey-green, and charcoal — reflecting differences in depth and mineralogy. At dawn in autumn and winter, mist rises vertically from the warm maar surfaces into cold air, creating smoking volcanic columns visible for kilometres. The Laacher See, the largest maar lake at 3.3 square kilometres and still geologically active with CO₂ bubbling from its depths, provides the most dramatic evidence that the Eifel's volcanic story is not yet finished. The entire landscape is a UNESCO Global Geopark.
About this spectacle
Standing at the rim of the Gemündener Maar at dawn in autumn, visitors witness something extraordinary: steam rising in near-vertical columns from the warm lake surface into cold air, mimicking the volcanic eruptions that formed these craters thousands of years ago. The circular lakes sit in steep-walled craters, their colours shifting from deep cobalt to grey-green to charcoal depending on depth and mineralogy. Walking between the Gemündener, Weinfelder, and Totenmaar takes visitors through a compact landscape where the earth's violent past is written in every contour. At Laacher See, the largest of the maars at 3.3 square kilometres, CO₂ still bubbles audibly to the surface — a reminder that the volcanic system beneath the Eifel remains active. The water clarity is remarkable, the silence broken only by birdsong and the faint hiss of escaping gas. In winter, frost on the crater rims frames the steaming lakes in ice.
