Eas a' Chùal Aluinn Waterfall — United Kingdom
Britain's tallest waterfall drops in a single plunge into a remote Sutherland glen, rewarding a wild Highland hike with one of the UK's most dramatic water spectacles.
About this spectacle
Eas a' Chùal Aluinn is often cited as the tallest waterfall in the United Kingdom, plunging in a single dramatic leap down a remote cliff face in the Scottish Highlands of Sutherland. Reaching it requires a challenging multi-hour hike across open moorland, rewarding those who make the effort with a spectacular curtain of white water set against austere, heather-clad hills and exposed Lewisian gneiss. The sound builds long before the falls come into view — a deep, resonant roar carried on the wind. In spate after heavy rain the falls are at their most powerful, the water catching any available light and trailing mist into the valley below. The surrounding landscape is raw and solitary: few other visitors, no facilities, and a vast Highland sky overhead. Winter can bring partial freezing, transforming the fall into a column of sculpted ice, while spring snowmelt swells the flow to its most impressive.
