Drin Gorge Komani Lake
A spectacular ferry journey through a dramatic limestone canyon, where turquoise reservoir waters and soaring cliffs make this Albania's most breathtaking river gorge.
About this spectacle
The Komani Lake ferry journey through the Drin Gorge is one of Europe's most dramatic and overlooked river voyages. Visitors board small ferries at Koman and glide through a narrow canyon where limestone cliffs rise hundreds of metres on either side, their sheer faces reflected in the milky turquoise waters of the reservoir below. The gorge twists and turns, revealing isolated villages perched impossibly on ledges, dense forest clinging to vertical walls, and the occasional eagle drifting overhead. The light shifts constantly as the boat rounds each bend, casting the canyon in deep shadow then sudden brilliance. The air is cool and damp near the waterline. There are no roads here — the lake is the only way in for the communities along its shores, giving the journey an authentic, unhurried quality. Most visitors travel from Koman to Fierza, a journey of roughly two to three hours that feels genuinely remote and wild.
