Draconid Meteor Shower — Northumberland International Dark Sky Park
One of England's darkest skies meets October's Draconid meteor shower — an early-evening spectacle across Northumberland's vast protected moorland.
About this spectacle
Each October, the Draconid meteor shower graces the skies above Northumberland International Dark Sky Park — one of England's largest areas of protected dark sky. Unlike most showers best viewed after midnight, Draconids are most active in the early evening when the radiant point in Draco sits high in the northern sky. Visitors lie back on the Northumberland moorland, wrapped against the autumn chill, watching meteors streak across a star-field largely free from light pollution. The park's minimal artificial lighting means the Milky Way is often visible on clear nights, providing a dramatic backdrop. Draconids vary considerably year to year — some years produce only a handful of meteors per hour, while occasional outbursts can yield hundreds. The wide-open landscape amplifies the sense of exposure under a vast, dark sky, making even a modest display feel immersive and profound.
