Drachenschlucht
A slot canyon gorge near Eisenach where mossy sandstone walls pinch so tight you must turn sideways — cool, dripping, and dramatically intimate.
About this spectacle
Drachenschlucht — 'Dragon's Gorge' — is a narrow sandstone ravine near Eisenach in the Thuringian Forest, where a small stream winds through moss-draped walls that press so close together a visitor must sometimes turn sideways to pass. The slot canyon plunges visitors into cool, dripping shade even on warm summer days, with fern-covered ledges and slick, water-sculpted rock faces creating an almost subterranean atmosphere. The sound of rushing water echoes off the tight walls, and the interplay of light filtering through the canopy overhead gives the gorge an otherworldly green glow. Wooden boardwalks span the narrowest sections, bridging pools and keeping feet above the stream. The trail emerges eventually into open forest, offering a strong sense of passage and discovery. It is a compact but memorable geological water feature best appreciated slowly, with eyes tuned to the textures of stone and moss.
