Delicate Arch
Utah's most iconic freestanding arch glows ember-orange at sunset above a dramatic canyon bowl — a geological masterpiece unlike anything else on Earth.
About this spectacle
Delicate Arch is the most iconic sandstone arch in Arches National Park, Utah — a freestanding 65-foot span of salmon-pink Entrada sandstone perched at the rim of a natural bowl above the Colorado River canyon. Visitors hike a 1.5-mile trail across slickrock to emerge suddenly at the arch's edge, greeted by a sweeping panorama of the La Sal Mountains in the distance. At sunrise or sunset the rock glows in shades of orange, amber, and deep red, creating one of the most photographed geological formations in North America. Wind, silence, and the vast open sky dominate the sensory experience. The final approach crosses an exposed ledge with dramatic drop-offs on one side and the arch framing the canyon beyond. There is no shade and no water; the desert heat and open terrain demand preparation, but the payoff — standing beneath this gravity-defying arch — is extraordinary.
