Cueva de los Verdes Lava Tube — Spain
Walk through a cathedral of ancient lava on Lanzarote, where volcanic tunnels reveal glowing mineral colours and a famous underground optical illusion.
About this spectacle
Cueva de los Verdes is a remarkable lava tube system on Lanzarote, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions from the Corona volcano. Visitors walk through a dramatic underground passage where the dark basaltic walls shimmer with muted greens, ochres, and purples — natural mineral stains that give the cave its name. The tunnel stretches through cathedral-like chambers where the ceiling arches overhead and sounds echo in the stillness. Guided tours wind through roughly a kilometre of illuminated passages, revealing lava formations, collapsed sections, and the eerie geometry of solidified magma flows. The air is cool and still, creating a striking contrast with the sun-baked landscape above. A surprise optical illusion — a hidden underground lake that appears to double the cave height — delights visitors near the tour's end.
