Cola de Caballo Ordesa
A spectacular Pyrenean waterfall thundering into the limestone cirque of Ordesa, reached by one of Spain's most scenic canyon walks.
About this spectacle
Cola de Caballo — 'Horse's Tail' — is one of the most celebrated waterfalls in the Spanish Pyrenees, plunging dramatically into the cirque at the head of the Ordesa Valley. Visitors following the valley floor trail are rewarded with a thundering curtain of white water tumbling down a sheer limestone cliff, mist rising in plumes that catch the mountain light. The surrounding canyon walls of Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park frame the fall in stratified rock and dense beech and fir forest. In spring and early summer, snowmelt swells the cascade to its most powerful, while autumn colours the woodland in gold and amber. The roar of the fall and the cool spray against the skin make this a deeply sensory experience, and the approach through the canyon — past smaller cascades and turquoise pools — is itself scenic throughout.
