Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark Unesco Global Geopark — Indonesia
Ancient oceanic crust thrust to the surface in West Java, forming dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and a sweeping horseshoe amphitheater overlooking the Indian Ocean.
About this spectacle
Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark stretches across the southwestern coast of West Java, where ancient oceanic crust has been thrust upward to create dramatic amphitheater-shaped valleys, sea cliffs, and cascading waterfalls that plunge toward a rugged Indian Ocean shoreline. Visitors encounter a rare geological cross-section of Cretaceous-era rocks—some of the oldest exposed in Indonesia—interspersed with terraced rice paddies and tropical forest. The Ciletuh Amphitheater, a broad horseshoe escarpment, frames sweeping views of green hills tumbling to turquoise bays below. Waves crash on sea stacks and black-sand beaches, while rivers cut through layered sedimentary formations. The geopark also hosts diverse coastal and forest wildlife. The overall experience blends raw geological drama with lush tropical scenery, offering a sense of standing at a genuinely ancient edge of the earth's crust.
