Chaîne des Puys
A near-perfect chain of 80 dormant volcanoes in central France — Europe's youngest and best-preserved volcanic landscape, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About this spectacle
The Chaîne des Puys is a spectacular alignment of nearly 80 volcanic cones, maars, and lava domes stretching across the Massif Central of France, just west of Clermont-Ferrand. Walking among these perfectly preserved volcanoes, visitors experience a surreal landscape where each summit offers sweeping views across a procession of dormant craters. The most iconic, Puy de Dôme, rises dramatically above the chain and rewards climbers with panoramas stretching to the Alps on clear days. The grassy flanks of the cones ripple in the wind, wildflowers colonise ancient lava flows, and the silence of this geologically young landscape — last active around 6,000 years ago — gives it an otherworldly calm. The scale and diversity of volcanic forms, from steep cinder cones to broad explosion craters flooded as lakes, make this one of Europe's most complete and accessible open-air geology lessons.
