Capulin Volcano
A near-perfect cinder cone rising from the New Mexico high plains, with a paved rim road, walk-in crater, and four-state panoramas.
About this spectacle
Capulin Volcano rises sharply from the high plains of northeastern New Mexico, its nearly symmetrical cinder cone silhouette immediately striking against the wide sky. A paved road spirals to the rim, where visitors look down into a bowl-shaped crater carpeted with scrub vegetation and out across a panorama stretching into four states on clear days. The crater trail loops the rim with constant wind and sweeping vistas, while a separate trail descends into the vent itself. The volcanic landscape is stark and textured — dark basalt flows fan outward from the cone's base, dotted with piñon and juniper. The silence and scale of the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field surrounding the cone make the setting feel remote despite the accessible road. Sunrise and sunset light the dark lava in warm tones, and the high elevation (over 8,000 feet) keeps summers cool. Mule deer occasionally browse the slopes, and raptors ride thermals overhead.
