About this spectacle

Cape Smokey rises dramatically from the Atlantic shoreline along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Visitors ascending the steep coastal highway are rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the Cape Breton Highlands, the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and rugged cliffs disappearing into the surf below. The cape is notorious for shrouding itself in mist and low cloud — the phenomenon that gives it its evocative name — creating an ever-shifting interplay of light, shadow, and sea fog. On clear days, the views extend for dozens of kilometres along the coastline. In autumn, the surrounding highland forest ignites with brilliant golds, reds, and oranges, making the vista among the most celebrated fall foliage lookouts in Atlantic Canada. The wind is a constant presence, carrying the scent of salt air across exposed viewpoints. Whether you arrive in morning clarity or afternoon haze, the cape rewards patience.
