Canyon de Chelly
Ancient cliff dwellings and soaring red sandstone walls converge in a living Navajo landscape on the Colorado Plateau.
About this spectacle
Canyon de Chelly cuts deep into the Colorado Plateau, its rust-red sandstone walls rising hundreds of feet above a cottonwood-lined canyon floor. Visitors standing at White House Overlook peer down at ancient Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings tucked into alcoves, their mud-brick walls still standing against the stone. The canyon glows warmest at dawn and dusk when low-angle sunlight saturates the ochre and crimson rock. Ravens call from the rim while the canyon floor, still farmed by Navajo families, offers a rare sense of living landscape. Wind-sculpted spires and sweeping meanders reward photographers at every bend, and the silence at the overlooks feels absolute against the scale of the canyon.
