Camargue Wetland — France
A wild river delta where flamingos wade beside white horses and black bulls — one of Europe's great wetland spectacles.
About this spectacle
The Camargue is a vast river delta where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, forming one of Western Europe's most significant wetland ecosystems. Shallow lagoons, reed beds, salt flats, and grazing marshes stretch to the horizon under an enormous Provençal sky. Visitors encounter the iconic white Camargue horses wading through standing water, black bulls roaming the marshes, and vast flocks of greater flamingos wading in the saline étangs, their pink plumage vivid against grey mudflats. Migratory birds converge here in staggering numbers during spring and autumn. The light is extraordinary — silvery at dawn, blazing at midday, golden at dusk — and the sense of wild, flat space is almost oceanic. Wind is a constant presence. The landscape shifts with the seasons: flooded in winter, sun-baked and hazy in summer, alive with birds year-round.
