Cabo da Roca
The westernmost point of continental Europe — a wind-lashed granite cliff edge where the land literally ends and the Atlantic begins.
About this spectacle
Cabo da Roca stands as the westernmost point of continental Europe, where sheer granite cliffs plunge dramatically into the churning Atlantic Ocean. Visitors arrive to find a raw, wind-scoured headland where the ocean stretches unbroken to the horizon in every direction west. The sound is constant — crashing surf far below, the hiss of Atlantic wind — and the air carries salt. A stone lighthouse and a monument mark the spot. On clear days the view spans dozens of kilometres of coastline in both directions, with rocky promontories and golden light catching the cliffs at dawn and dusk. The drama is geological and elemental: no jungle canopy, no wildlife spectacle, just the edge of a continent meeting an ocean. Clouds and sea mist can reduce visibility to metres, adding atmosphere rather than detracting from the experience. The site is managed and easily reached from Sintra or Cascais.
