Buckskin Gulch
One of the world's longest slot canyons, Buckskin Gulch plunges through sculpted sandstone into a narrow, cathedral-like passage of swirling color and shadow.
About this spectacle
Buckskin Gulch is one of the longest and deepest slot canyons in the American Southwest, carved by water through Navajo sandstone over millennia. Visitors walk between towering walls that narrow to shoulder-width in places, with the canyon floor sometimes dropping into pools of standing water. The interplay of filtered light on striated orange, red, and purple stone creates an ever-shifting palette. Sound is hushed and amplified at once — footsteps echo, the outside world vanishes. The route involves boulder scrambling, wading through murky water pockets, and navigating sections where the walls close in overhead. Flash flood risk makes timing and weather awareness critical. The sense of geological depth and isolation is profound, drawing photographers and hikers seeking an otherworldly corridor few roads can access.
