Boschplaat Dark Sky
One of the darkest sky locations in the Netherlands, where the remote Wadden Sea reserve offers star-filled nights above silent tidal flats.
About this spectacle
Boschplaat is the eastern tip of Terschelling island, a remote and protected nature reserve in the Dutch Wadden Sea. With minimal artificial light for miles around, the flat, open landscape offers some of the darkest skies in the Netherlands on clear nights. Visitors standing on the sandy dunes or along the tideline can witness the Milky Way arching overhead, with stars reflecting faintly in the shallow tidal flats. The silence is near-total — wind, distant waves, and the occasional call of a wading bird are the only sounds. Light pollution from the mainland is visible on the horizon to the south, but the northern sky over the North Sea opens into genuine darkness. Autumn and winter nights offer the longest dark hours. Access requires a ferry to Terschelling followed by a long walk or cycle into the reserve, making the experience feel genuinely remote and rewarding for those who make the effort.
