Bopath Ella Falls — Sri Lanka
A fan-shaped waterfall in Sri Lanka's rainforest, named for its bo-leaf silhouette and best experienced after monsoon rains.
About this spectacle
Bopath Ella Falls in Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa Province is a striking waterfall named for its resemblance to a bo leaf (the sacred fig) when viewed from below. Visitors are greeted by a wide, fan-shaped curtain of water crashing into a rocky pool, surrounded by dense tropical greenery. The sound is immersive — a constant roar punctuated by the calls of forest birds. The mist rising from the base keeps the air cool and fresh even in warmer months. The surrounding jungle path is lush and atmospheric, with ferns and mosses clinging to every surface. Swimming in the pool at the base is a popular local activity. The falls are most dramatic during and after the monsoon rains, when water volume peaks and the fan shape is at its widest and most impressive.
