Bonifacio limestone cliffs
Bone-white limestone cliffs plunge into turquoise water at Corsica's southern tip, carrying a medieval citadel on their brink — one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic coastal tableaux.
About this spectacle
At the southernmost tip of Corsica, the white limestone cliffs of Bonifacio rise dramatically from the turquoise Mediterranean, their eroded bases hollowed by centuries of wave action into grottos and overhangs. From the sea, the cliffs are most striking: sheer white faces streaked with ochre and grey, topped by the old citadel town of Bonifacio which seems to hover impossibly over the void. Visitors on boat tours pass beneath these walls and enter sea caves where the light shifts from brilliant blue to deep shadow. From the clifftop, the view south across the Strait of Bonifacio to Sardinia is unobstructed and vast. The rock has been sculpted into fins, arches, and stacks by wind and salt. Seabirds nest in the crevices, and the scrubby maquis above the cliffs adds a wild, aromatic quality to the experience. The combination of geological drama, clear water, and historic townscape makes this one of the Mediterranean's most photogenic coastal panoramas.
