About this spectacle

The Blue Grotto on Malta's southern coast is a series of sea caves carved into golden limestone cliffs, where the interaction of sunlight and crystal-clear Mediterranean water creates an intense, otherworldly blue luminescence inside the caverns. Visitors board small traditional wooden luzzu-style boats that navigate through the cave arches, allowing the phosphorescent blue and violet hues to surround them. The glow comes from sunlight refracting through the shallow seabed and reflecting off the cave walls, most vivid in the morning when the sun is low and directly illuminating the entrances. The caves are home to a variety of marine algae and sea sponges that shimmer in the light. Outside the grotto, the cliff scenery and the deep turquoise of the open sea provide additional visual drama, making the short boat ride an intensely photographic and visceral experience.
