Blue Cave Bisevo
A sea cave off Croatia's Biševo island where sunlight refracts through an underwater opening to bathe the interior in a brilliant, electric-blue glow.
About this spectacle
The Blue Cave on the island of Biševo off Croatia's Dalmatian coast is a sea cave where sunlight enters through an underwater opening and refracts off the white sandy seabed, flooding the interior with an ethereal, electric-blue glow. Visitors arrive by small boat, ducking their heads to enter the low cave mouth, and find themselves surrounded by walls shimmering in shifting shades of cobalt and turquoise. The effect is most intense around midday when the sun is high and light penetrates the submerged entrance at its most direct angle. The cave is relatively small, and the experience is brief but visually stunning — the glowing water and eerie luminous atmosphere create an impression unlike almost any other natural cave environment. The sound of gentle waves echoing off stone walls adds a sensory layer to the spectacle.
