Blackwater Falls

About this spectacle

Blackwater Falls is named for the amber-tinted water that tumbles over a dramatic sandstone ledge deep in the Allegheny Highlands of West Virginia. The dark hue comes from tannins leaching from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles upstream, giving the cascade a rich tea-brown color that contrasts vividly against white winter ice and green summer foliage. Visitors follow a wooden boardwalk and staircase down from the rim to viewing platforms where the roar of the falls fills the gorge. In autumn, the surrounding forest ignites in brilliant oranges and reds, framing the falls in peak color. Winter transforms the scene into an icy spectacle as the spray freezes into elaborate formations along the canyon walls. The gorge itself — carved through Pennsylvanian-era rock — creates a cool, mist-filled microclimate even on warm days. Spring snowmelt pushes the flow to its most powerful, and summer offers lush green shade along the descent trail.
