About this spectacle

Black Canyon of the Gunnison presents one of North America's most dramatic geological spectacles — a narrow, precipitous gorge where dark Precambrian gneiss and schist walls plunge nearly vertically toward the silver ribbon of the Gunnison River far below. Standing at the South Rim, visitors feel the canyon's sheer verticality and compressed scale: at its narrowest, the chasm is barely wider than its depth. Shadows pool in the depths for most of the day, giving the canyon its name and a quality of unnerving depth. Swifts dart across the void, canyon wrens deliver their cascading song, and the smell of pinyon and juniper drifts along the rim. The interplay of dark rock and light — brilliant at dawn when the first rays catch pale pegmatite striations — rewards photographers and quiet observers alike. It is a landscape that feels ancient, austere, and wholly itself.
