Belmore Falls — Australia
A dramatic two-tiered waterfall plunging into a sandstone gorge in the Southern Highlands, best seen when the creek runs full after rain.
About this spectacle
Belmore Falls is a two-tiered waterfall tucked into the Morton National Park escarpment of the Southern Highlands, New South Wales. Standing at the lookout, visitors watch the creek plunge into a deep, fern-lined gorge, the mist rising from the plunge pool carrying the scent of eucalyptus and wet sandstone. The layered rock face glows amber and ochre in morning light, while the surrounding plateau is thick with banksia and gum forest. The sound of rushing water fills the air, interrupted only by birdsong. A short walk through bush brings you to the cliff edge, where the scale of the gorge opens dramatically below. After rain the falls swell and thunder with extra force, sending spray across the viewing area. The experience is quiet and intimate compared to more famous Australian waterfalls, rewarding those who seek it out.
