Beavertail Point

About this spectacle

Beavertail Point sits at the southern tip of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, where the Atlantic meets rocky shoreline with raw, open force. Visitors stand on wave-scoured granite ledges watching swells roll in and crash in white explosions of spray, particularly dramatic during nor'easters and autumn storms. The lighthouse — one of the oldest sites in North America — anchors the view, while the bay stretches northward toward the skyline of Newport across the water. The light changes dramatically here: golden hour paints the rocks amber, fog rolls in unpredictably, and clear days offer sweeping 180-degree ocean panoramas. Tide pools pocket the lower ledges, and migrating raptors and shorebirds funnel past in autumn. The park is small but exposed, and the wind is nearly always present, carrying salt spray and the sound of surf.
