43 m free-standing sandstone needle on Pfaffenstein.
About this spectacle
Rising 43 metres from the summit plateau of Pfaffenstein, the Barbarine is one of the most striking free-standing sandstone pillars in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxony. Visitors who make the ascent to Pfaffenstein are rewarded with a close-up view of this slender, tapered needle — its warm ochre and rust-streaked rock glowing in morning or afternoon light. The pillar stands in dramatic contrast against the forested plateau and the open sky, offering a sense of geological scale that photographs struggle to capture. Wind-shaped over millennia, the Barbarine was once climbable but climbing is now prohibited to protect the formation. The surrounding Pfaffenstein plateau adds further interest, with weathered rock formations, viewpoints over the Elbe valley, and Saxon Switzerland's characteristic table-mountain landscape stretching in every direction.
