About this spectacle

The Bad Gastein Waterfall plunges dramatically through the heart of the spa town of Bad Gastein in the Austrian Alps, cascading in a series of tiers directly alongside the historic buildings and hotels that cling to the steep valley walls. Visitors standing on the bridges and terraces feel the cool mist on their skin and hear the constant roar of the falls, which form an extraordinary urban backdrop unlike almost any other alpine resort. The torrent is fed by snowmelt, running most powerfully in late spring and early summer, when the whitewater churns with particular force. The falls are visible from multiple vantage points without any hiking, making them one of the most accessible waterfall spectacles in the Alps. At dusk the surrounding architecture and the rushing water create a scene of unusual drama, and in winter the partially frozen cascade takes on an eerie sculptural quality.
