Baatara gorge waterfall — Lebanon
A waterfall plunges through three stacked natural limestone bridges into a cave abyss — one of Lebanon's most dramatic geological spectacles.
About this spectacle
The Baatara gorge waterfall plunges through three natural limestone bridges stacked one above the other, disappearing into a deep cave carved by millennia of erosion in the Tannourine region of northern Lebanon. Visitors stand at the rim and peer down into a narrow chasm where the water cascades perhaps 100 metres before vanishing into darkness, framed by ancient rock arches. In late winter and spring, snowmelt swells the flow to a thundering torrent, filling the gorge with mist and the roar of falling water. The contrast between the pale limestone, the green cedar-covered slopes above, and the dark void below creates a scene of raw geological drama. Outside the snowmelt season the waterfall diminishes significantly. The site is reached by a short but steep descent on a rocky path, making it a rewarding half-day excursion from the Bekaa valley or coastal cities.
