About this spectacle

Athirappilly Falls is often called the 'Niagara of India', a sweeping curtain of water crashing over a rocky escarpment amid the dense rainforest of Kerala's Chalakudy river basin. Visitors approach through jungle trails where the roar of water grows steadily louder before the full spectacle reveals itself — a broad, multi-tiered cascade plunging into a churning pool surrounded by mist. The surrounding Sholayar forest shelters hornbills, lion-tailed macaques, and Malabar giant squirrels, so the journey to the falls is itself alive with sights and sounds. The air is cool and saturated with spray even at a distance. During the monsoon months, the falls swell dramatically, turning into a thunderous wall of white water. Outside monsoon, calmer flows reveal the layered rock formations beneath. Sunset light catches the mist and occasionally produces rainbows over the pool below.
