About this spectacle

Askja is a remote caldera volcano in Iceland's central highlands, reached via a demanding highland track open only in summer. Visitors descend into a vast volcanic landscape where dark lava fields and pumice plains meet twin caldera lakes — the smaller Víti crater filled with geothermally warmed milky-blue water, and the much deeper Öskjuvatn. The silence is immense, the terrain raw and otherworldly, and the scale humbling. Steam sometimes rises from fumaroles, and the rugged surrounding rhyolite ridges add layers of color to an otherwise stark palette of black, grey, and pale blue. The drive itself along the F-road is an adventure, crossing river fords and volcanic desert. On clear days the views across the highland plateau are vast and unobstructed.
