About this spectacle

The Aquinnah Cliffs rise dramatically at the westernmost tip of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, revealing layers of multicolored clay and sediment deposited over millennia of glacial activity. Visitors stand at the cliff edge and gaze down at sweeping Atlantic vistas, where rust-red, white, and ochre striations in the rock face catch the sun's light differently throughout the day. The beach below is scattered with smooth stones and the air carries a persistent salt breeze. The Gay Head Lighthouse stands nearby, adding a human counterpoint to the raw geological drama. At sunset, the warm light amplifies the clay's warm tones to vivid effect, and the long views west over open ocean make dusk a particularly rewarding time to visit.
