Apsley Falls — Australia
A dramatic waterfall plunging into a deep sandstone gorge in northern NSW — one of the most striking natural lookouts on the New England Tablelands.
About this spectacle
Apsley Falls plunges dramatically through ancient sandstone gorge country in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, New South Wales. Visitors stand at clifftop lookouts gazing down into a deep, forested gorge where the Apsley River drops in a series of cascades before plummeting into a dark plunge pool far below. The roar of falling water fills the air, and fine mist drifts up from the gorge on still mornings. Surrounding eucalypt and rainforest vegetation clings to steep canyon walls, and wedge-tailed eagles are occasionally spotted riding thermals above the gorge. The viewing platforms offer striking perspectives across the chasm — the sheer scale of the drop and the raw, carved geometry of the sandstone walls create a genuinely arresting spectacle. After rains the falls run hard and brown with tannins, while in drier periods the flow thins but the gorge itself remains impressive.
