Apostle Islands Ice Caves
Walk across frozen Lake Superior to reach sea caves glazed in spectacular curtains of icicles and frozen waterfalls — a winter phenomenon that forms only in the coldest years.
About this spectacle
In the depths of a Wisconsin winter, the sea caves along the Apostle Islands shoreline transform into a cathedral of ice. Visitors walk across frozen Lake Superior to reach cave entrances where walls are draped in curtains of blue and white icicles, frozen waterfalls, and frost formations that catch the pale winter light. Inside the caves, the silence is absolute except for the occasional groan of shifting ice beneath your feet. The formations range from delicate frost flowers on the sandstone to massive columns of aquamarine ice. When sunlight filters in, the ice glows with an eerie luminescence that no photograph fully captures. The experience is humbling and otherworldly — standing in a frozen grotto carved from ancient sandstone, surrounded by formations that may only last days before the next thaw.
