Anse des Cascades
A tropical coastal cove on Réunion where freshwater cascades spill off lava cliffs directly into the Indian Ocean, framed by ancient banyan trees.
About this spectacle
At Anse des Cascades, freshwater streams born high in Réunion's volcanic interior tumble off dark lava cliffs and fall directly into the turquoise Indian Ocean. The sound is layered — the steady rush of falling water, the rhythmic crash of waves, and the rustling of enormous banyan trees whose aerial roots drape across the rock face. The cove itself is intimate and sheltered, the black lava contrasting sharply with the vivid green canopy overhead and the brilliant blue of the sea below. Visitors can stand close to where fresh and salt water meet, feeling the cool spray from the cascades and the warm ocean breeze simultaneously. Small fishing boats sometimes rest in the cove, adding a quiet human scale to the scene. The light here is dramatic — morning sun catches the falling water and illuminates the translucent curtains of spray against the dark cliff.
