Almbachklamm
3 km gorge near Berchtesgaden with falls, pools, and a working marble mill.
About this spectacle
Almbachklamm is a dramatic 3-kilometre gorge carved through the limestone mountains near Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. Visitors walk through a narrow canyon where the Almbach river churns through sculpted rock pools, tumbles over cascading falls, and rushes beneath wooden walkways bolted to the cliff faces. The roar of the water fills the gorge, spray mists the air, and shafts of light filter through overhanging rock. The trail passes a historic marble mill — the Kugelmühle — that has been polishing marble balls here for centuries and remains in working order, offering a striking counterpoint to the raw natural scenery. The enclosed canyon creates its own microclimate: cool and lush even in summer heat. Mosses and ferns cling to the dripping walls, and the emerald-green pools below the falls invite lingering. The path follows wooden bridges and boardwalks back and forth across the stream, making the sound and movement of water a constant companion throughout the walk.
