About this spectacle

Benagil Cave is one of the Algarve's most dramatic sea caves, carved by centuries of Atlantic wave action into the ochre limestone cliffs near Lagoa. Visitors approach by kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or small tour boat, gliding through a narrow sea arch into a cathedral-like chamber where a circular skylight in the domed ceiling floods the interior with shafts of warm golden light. The sandy beach inside is sheltered and otherworldly — turquoise water lapping against pale sand while the ocean roars just beyond the entrance. The scale of the dome overhead and the play of light at midday are the visual payoff. Outside the cave, the coastline of Praia de Benagil offers dramatic stacks, arches, and honeycombed cliffs of warm-toned sandstone that glow at sunrise and sunset. Swell conditions and tide height strongly influence how accessible the cave entrance is on any given day.
