Akaka Falls State Park — United States
A single 442-foot cascade free-falls into a misty rainforest gorge on Hawaii's Big Island — one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the US.
About this spectacle
Akaka Falls State Park delivers one of Hawaii's most dramatic waterfall experiences along a lush, forested loop trail on the Big Island. The centerpiece, Akaka Falls, plunges in a single unbroken curtain into a moss-lined gorge far below, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation including bamboo groves, wild orchids, and giant philodendron. The roar of falling water fills the narrow canyon, and mist drifts upward through the rainforest canopy. A shorter cascade, Kahuna Falls, punctuates the trail before visitors round the bend to the main event. The scent of wet earth and tropical blooms is constant. Birdsong from native and introduced species fills the gaps between the thunder of the falls. The paved loop trail winds through a living greenhouse of greenery, rewarding walkers with layered views at every turn. Even on overcast days — common in this high-rainfall corridor — the falls are impressive, and clouds can add a moody drama to photographs.
